Directionless Karwaan…

I was spoilt for choice on the 3rd August weekend with 3 apparently watchable movies releasing!! I decided to give Karwaan a shot!!

The movie almost starts with Avinash finding out that his father\’s dead body has been exchanged with someone else\’s and what ensues is a road trip taking various twists and turns, quite literally, on the road that is! However the sad part is, the twists sound more forceful than natural occurrences… Just for the sake of stretching the story or taking you through different locations of the God\’s own country, Kerala.

The extremely cheap, inappropriate and pathetic jokes that Irfan cracks on the death and the mortal remains of Dulquer Salman\’s father are something beyond imagination!! I mean try imagining such jokes being cracked on the death of your immediate family or friends. Of all the people, it had to be the talented Irrfan who had to mouth these lines. Had it been Salman or even Akshay or Anil Kapoor it would have been still ok, but Irrfan??

Right from the start, I had this feeling that this movie is a Cocktail of 3 Idiots, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Jab We Met. Dulquer Salman\’s character is blatantly lifted from Farhan\’s (Madhavan) character from 3 Idiots. His father demeaning him left and right regarding his passion and decision of his career path included! The movie makers dint even take the pains to change his profession. Karwaan\’s Avinash very much resembles the quiet, straight forward, sincere, serious and matured Jab We Met Aditya Kashyap while Geet resembles Karwaan\’s Tanya who is happy go lucky, sporadic, living in the moment kind of a girl!! And then there are typical personality clashes, opinion clashes that are bound to happen between two extreme personas.

There\’s not even a single song that I would recall or hum even for a couple of days. The cinematography is picturesque, but undoubtedly because of God\’s own country Kerala! Tying your grandmother\’s coffin atop the Nano seems a bit too far fetched though! There are almost no intense or extreme scenes for the characters to showcase their talent and the story too keeps on moving on a predictable Kaarwan..

All in all, definitely not a movie that you would have expected from Producer Ronney Screwala ( Past movies include RDB, Swades, Khosala ka Ghosla, Fashion, No one killed Jessica), Irrfan (need not be elaborated), dialogue writer Hussain Dalal ( past : Yeh jawani hai diwani, 2 States)…

As fate would have it, Irrfan has set upon a different Karwaan altogether in real life even before the movie could release. I wish and pray that he comes out of it hale and hearty and does many more brilliant movies as he has done in the past!!
