One of the best things to do on a Sunday morning is to watch a movie and have a sumptuous breakfast. So there I was, First Sunday, First show for a movie which I had lot of expectation from!!
Irrfan Khan plays the skewed minded protagonist who is stuck in a boring job, EMIs and lack of action in his life. One fine day, when he decides to surprise his wife, he gets a not so pleasant surprise instead, after finding out that his wife has an extra marital affair. Instead of taking an extreme step, he blackmails his wife\’s lover and the chain continues….. The story nicely depicts the struggles of a typical middle class only earning member of a family, almost finding it difficult trying to make ends meet, giving in to temptation, getting screwed in the process and so on….!!
The dark comedy continues, spiced with some fine tuned dialogues with perfect comic timing like SHAADI GAON MEIN HOTI HAI SHAHER MEIN TOH BAND BAJTA HAI!! An apparent and unexpected twist in the tale is the \’Intermission\’ moment, when one of the character dies, out of no where..!! However, repetitive use of the strategy in the movie takes away the surprise element. The songs don\’t invade the story and the music and the lyrics have a different touch.. All in all, it is a nice bhel of morals, greed, comedy, suspense and thriller spiced with some wonderful dialogues!! Irrfan, Kirti Kulhari, Anjali Sathe with her cameo role, Omi Vaidya, Arunoday Singh, Divya Dutta and others all are spot on! However, I get a feeling that Omi is getting typecast as a heavily accented dumb idiot with naive understanding of women!
A friend had a very different take on this movie. She said that it was very predictive in nature. But when we analysed, we realised that she thought so because she had read a lot of suspense thriller novels and seen a lot of English movies! To everyone his own!! One thing is for sure… Unlike some other directors and producers in recent times who fell from the pedestal after some hits, Abhinay Dev leaves up to his reputation of Delhi Belly….
